In the News

Today we depart from our usual format of SE news and events first, because

WAYNE ROONEY IS JOINING D.C. UNITED!

This is actually happening, folks! Rooney arrived at Dulles Int'l Airport Thursday and was greeted by much fanfare and hundreds of supporters, including members of DC SCORES and the Screaming Eagles. The Englishman was delighted with the reception:
"It was fantastic and I never expected it and I appreciate it."

He promptly got to work, training with United academy players Friday at RFK, and he was not shy about "having a go at them for not running as hard as they should have."

On Monday (or Wayne Rooney Day, as Mayor Bowser declared it), United held a press conference at which Rooney posed with his new jersey (#9), and discussed D.C. and the club. Some excerpts:

  • "The league has gotten better and I think the club realized that and have to improve if we want to be successful again, and I believe that is what the club is trying to do....in order for the club to move forward, we will need to bring a few more players in and I’m sure the manager and owners are looking at that..."

  • "Obviously, we’re a young team, and we need to improve, I think that’s clear to see...I think there is talent in the team, maybe with a little bit of guidance and a little bit of help, on and off of the pitch, I can help them and they can help me. So, I am looking forward to it... I can't wait to get started."

We can't wait either! While it is unreasonable to expect Rooney to single-handedly turn the Black-and-Red's season around, he is a proven goal-scorer with a well-known work ethic, and we look forward to seeing what he can do. Rooney is expected to suit up for United's home opener at Audi on July 14th.

Screaming Eagles News and Events

Happy Independence Day, everyone! We hope you enjoy a day of food, family, friends and fun.

Speaking of friends and fun...United's first home game at Audi Field is in less than two weeks! Our tailgate volunteers have been hard at work in the summer sunshine the past few weekends, helping out at the ECC in preparation for our first tailgate July 14th. If you'd like to help with preparations or if you want to join the tailgate crew, let us know!

Single game tickets for the Audi Field supporters' section can be purchased online to stand in the North Stands or sit in The Perch. Don't miss out!

United legend (and father of midfielder Ian Harkes) John Harkes was featured in an interview on Fox5 DC Monday as part of the network's World Cup coverage. He was kind enough to give the Screaming Eagles a shout-out; thanks for the love, Harkesy!

Your fellow supporters have started an open Facebook group to have a productive, collaborative conversation about game day activities at Audi. Join in!

Summer SCORES is in full swing over at DC SCORES, providing free soccer camps and arts education to local schoolchildren. This week, a group of campers from Leckie Elementary School will visit our newest partner, the Earth Conservation Corps. The kids will take part in a presentation on local raptors, and go on a river tour of the Anacostia. We're sure they'll learn a ton and have a blast - we can't wait to see the photos!

Last week's MLS jersey auction on behalf of Big Rob raised nearly $3000 to help with medical care and living expenses in his fight against leukemia. Well done, folks! You can continue to donate to Rob directly at this link.

As we mentioned last week, Gail Rongen, wife of former United Coach Thomas Rongen, needs a kidney transplant. You can help by registering as a donor and getting tested for compatibility at kidney.org.

Current Minnesota United midfielder and former D.C. United homegrown Collin Martin made soccer history last weekend! Martin became only the second player in the history of Major League Soccer (the LA Galaxy's Robbie Rogers was the first) to publicly come out as gay. His announcement coincided with the end of Pride Month and with MNUFC's pride match. In an interview with the Washington Post, Martin was quoted as saying "You’re going to be received well on a team as long as you’re a good teammate and do your job every day.” Keep up the good work, Collin!

On the Field

Despite a brace from Yamil Asad, United failed to pick up any points from their match against the New England Revolution, losing 3-2. We're still not sure how Andrew Farrell shoving Oniel Fisher until he fell over into Farrell's path turned into a PK (and the winning goal) for the Revs, but controversial calls notwithstanding, the game proved disappointing. The Black-and-Red once again conceded goals shortly after scoring their own.

Silver Linings:

  • Asad can and will score with his face, y'all.

  • With his start, Jalen Robinson earned a few more bucks for Playing for Pride, which ran through the month of June.

Next: The last West Coast game of the season, against Zlatan Ibrahimovic and the LA Galaxy (currently 8th in the Western Conference).

The Washington Spirit (our local pro women's team) also failed to earn any points over the weekend against Chicago. The Spirit is having a season that may look familiar to United fans, only with more injuries and fewer goals. Nonetheless, we remain optimistic, and we are tremendously excited about their upcoming game next month at Audi Field! Please join us, and catch USWNT stars Ashley Hatch, Rose Lavelle, Andi Sulivan, and Taylor Smith, as they take on the Portland Thorns.
