We're Keeping Our Crown Jewel!

Let's Get Together, Yeah Yeah Yeah

Here's hoping you're staying warm this chilly week - remind us again why some people think MLS should play on a European schedule?

Our President (James) and VP (Jimi) have recently returned from a trip to Dallas for the 10th annual Independent Supporters Council Conference. You can read more about the organizational goals for the year here.

Because no soccer conference is complete without at least a little fun, we bring you video of the delegates (including our own) indulging their singing "skills". Footage comes courtesy of The Cooligans, a hilarious pair of comedians with a killer soccer podcast. Jimi and James also spent time hanging out with the duo (Christian Polanco in photo) - no word yet on whether we can coax them down from NYC for a tailgate.

Speaking of meetings, it's nearly time for ours! Please join us for our Annual Members Meeting, coming up in just over two weeks. We'll discuss the upcoming season (only a month to go!), and the direction of the club. United GM Dave Kasper will be stopping by for a Q&A with members. Plus, we're holding a raffle featuring sweet United memorabilia, and there'll be a cash bar!

The meeting is members-only, but if you haven't signed up or renewed your membership yet, you can do so online ahead of time. An RSVP is also required, so we can plan appropriately.

Warm Moments During the Polar Vortex

Young United supporter Zach (center of photo) needs our help! Zach is participating in this month's Polar Plunge to benefit Special Olympics of Virginia, and is aiming to raise $750 in donations.

If we all kick in a few bucks, he should be able to get to his target in no time - Vamos!

United defender (and big DC SCORES supporter) Chris Odoi-Atsem has successfully completed his chemotherapy treatment for Hodgkin's lymphoma this week!

As is traditional for oncology patients at MedStar Georgetown University Health, Chris capped it all off by ringing the bell with his family to mark the end of his treatment. If you haven't seen the video yet, we can't recommend it enough (but have a tissue handy).

Chris has been declared cancer-free, and is hard at work moving towards a return to the pitch. We can't wait to see him on the field at Audi!

The Good, the Bad, and the Heartbreaking

Two weeks is an eternity in transfer window time - let's review:

  • Leonardo Jara (pictured) The ink is dry on the page for this Boca Juniors RB, who has been signed to a season-long loan (pending visa receipt). According to WaPo, Luciano Acosta steered him our way.

  • Oniel Fisher While we're talking right backs, United has re-signed this Jamaican speedster, who is hard at work rehabbing last year's knee injury. Fisher is expected to be back this summer.

  • Donovan Pines Why yes, we'd love a 6' 5" CB, thanks for asking! Our favorite story so far about this Maryland defender is how he was unavailable for interviews with reporters at the end of a training session because he had to go study. We like this kid.

  • Richie Williams The former United and USMNT midfielder has been hired as the new Head Coach of our USL affiliate, Loudoun United FC.

In and Needs His Own Category

  • Luciano Acosta - In case you somehow missed the roller coaster of the last 36 hours, here's a recap:

Wednesday: United turned down a $7.5 million offer from Saudi club Al-Hilal (who just picked up Giovinco) for La Joya. United reportedly offered him their own deal of $8 million over four years. Then came reports that PSG had apparently offered $10 million, and Acosta had left DCU training camp to fly to Europe Thursday for a physical. United GM Dave Kaspar also traveled to Europe to hash out the details. Thursday: Got nuts. Acosta passed his physical (of course he did), but after spending all day wrangling over details, PSG and United were unable to come to an agreement before the end of the transfer window. Various reports cite significant differences between the offering and asking prices. Others claim PSG manager Thomas Tuchel killed the deal. One European sports show stated that PSG was only looking for a short 6-month solution to their Neymar injury problem, not the full transfer United and Acosta had anticipated. Whatever the reasons, Lucho will be headed back to Florida soon for preseason training, although we wouldn't be surprised if the Black-and-Red give him a couple of days off first...and perhaps a raise?

  • David Ousted The Chicago Fire have signed a deal for the Danish keeper. This opened up an international spot, promptly given to Leo Jara.

It's a Definite Maybe

  • Yamil Asad With Acosta staying, all bets are off as to whether United will be willing to play the asking price for Asad. He is down in Argentina with his club Velez Sarsfield, but did not play in last weekend's match.

  • Zoltan Steiber No new updates on the Steiber Situation, and he continues to train with the team. United has been reported as looking to shop his million-dollar price tag, but no takers so far.

OK. Take a deep breath. We've got some entirely unrelated great soccer news!

  • The USWNT bounced back from a loss to France earlier in the month to a 1-0 victory over Spain.

  • Gregg Berhalter's first match as USMNT coach (and the first match for several players on the team) brought home a 3-0 victory over Panama. Paul Arriola saw match time in the second half. Fingers crossed that Russell Canouse takes the field Saturday vs. Costa Rica. Move over, Michael Bradley!

  • The Washington Spirit has signed a broadcast partnership deal with NBC Sports and Monumental Sports Network
