Catch Up On All the Latest

Holy Hat Trick, Batman!

Marching On - PLEASE READ was your weekend? Anything exciting happen?

More on that below. First, some urgent club business. Even if you read nothing else in this ITB, please read this!

Thanks to the hundreds of you who joined us for Sunday's tailgate (photos here); it was great to see so many returning members, and to celebrate so many new ones! Our volunteers are working incredibly hard to provide a quality tailgate experience. Which brings us to the following...

As most if not all of you know by now, our tailgate host is the nonprofit Earth Conservation Corps. These folks do amazing work in the community, helping restore the Anacostia River while simultaneously transforming the lives of local children and at-risk youth. If you've been to at least a few of our tailgates, you also know that the ECC is also home to some amazing raptors, including kestrels and hawks. Trained ECC staff members often circulate through the crowd with these gorgeous birds, offering our members and guests a chance to meet, learn about, and in some cases, even touch them.

However, as you also know (or should by now if you've talked to our volunteers or looked at our website), there are rules. All tailgate attendees are expected to follow the directions of SE volunteers and ECC staff, and to respect posted signs. Failure to do so, as in the case of the attendee last weekend who deliberately went into a restricted area to try take a selfie with a raptor, is ill-advised and dangerous. Did we mention it's pretty stupid, too?

The raptors, although amazing and wonderful, are wild animals. The rules exist for your protection as much as for theirs. You may very well be injured, or injure a raptor in the process, if you break the rules. Such behavior is completely unacceptable, and will not be tolerated. You will immediately be removed from the premises, and you may be banned from all future tailgates.

Capiche? Excellent. Thanks for reading! Moving on...

You Get a Red Card! You Get a Red Card!

Prior to Sunday's kickoff, United staff and supporters took the opportunity to honor former Black-and-Red championship-winning goalkeeper. Nick Rimando. Rimando played for D.C. from 2002-6, and played a crucial role in bringing home the 2004 MLS Cup. He also spent several years between the pipes for the U.S. MNT.

Currently the GK for Real Salt Lake, Rimando has announced his intent to retire from MLS at the end of the season. Thanks for everything, Nick! The league won't be the same without you.

Unfortunately for Rimando, the rest of the evening did not go nearly so well for him.

Even before the referee started handing out red cards, Wayne Rooney had United up 2-0. After RSL learned the hard way that kicking Luciano Acosta in the face at Audi Field is strictly frowned upon, the Black-and-Red clearly enjoyed their man advantage.

Thanks to help from Acosta and Junior Moreno in the second half, Rooney earned his first MLS hat trick, to the delight of his teammates and supporters. After RSL fouled themselves down to nine men, Rooney then provided one hell of an corner kick assist to facilitate Lucas "Titi" Rodriguez's first MLS goal, the team's fourth of the night and a definite contender for goal of the season.

And then heck, why not one more? Have yourself a goal, Ulises Segura! That made two assists for Moreno, in case you're counting. He, Jara, and Rooney made the MLS Team of the Week.

Mercy rule? There is no mercy rule. We've got a cup to win!
