Houston Draw in Blazing Heat

First, a DC United update from the two-month World Cup break:

Andre Dozzell, a 27 year old English midfielder, was signed in May. Dozzell was a free agent who most recently played for Portsmouth FC in England's Championship League

Jackson Hopkins signed a new contract with DC through 2029.

DC forward Hakim Karamoko was loaned to Forward Madison.

Gabriel Pirani was traded to San Diego FC for General Allocation Money.

Aaron Herrera was waived.

Goalkeeper Jordan Farr was recalled from his loan to Loudoun United.

El Salvadoran forward Nathan Ordaz (22 years old) was acquired from LAFC for $2.375M plus performance incentives. Ordaz has 14 caps for the Salvadoran national team. Seems like a lot for a player who wasn't starting for LAFC. Ordaz will be a U22 player, which still leaves an open DP slot.

Now, on to the game report. It was a blazing day in Houston, with the temperature breaking 100 degrees during the day and 92 at game time. Houston is a humid place too, unlike some other parts of Texas. There were legitimate "cooling breaks" in each half (unlike the recently completed World Cup, with "hydration" breaks for all games, even indoors, to allow FIFA to run extra commercials and change the game from halfs to quarters).

DC's lineup:

Peglow, Servania, Andre Dozzell, Hopkins in midfield

Munteanu, Baribo at forward

Subs: Peltola for Hopkins (53rd), Stroud for Servania (67th), Nathan Ordaz for Munteanu (67th), Kijima for Peglow (67th), Markovic for Dozzell (88th).

Rowles had a "twinge" before the game (according to Apple TV's announcers) and did not suit up. Hefti is no longer blonde!

DC looked good for most of the first half, playing solid defense and showing good ball movement. Neither team offered much offensively until the 40th minute, when Hefti committed a foul on the wing and Houston scored off the resulting free kick. DC headed the cross clear, but right to Hector Herrera who scored to the near post. It was 1-0 Houston at the half.

DC looked shaky early in the second half and benefitted from a great save by Johnson on Mateusz Bogusz, who shredded the center of the DC defense in the 47th minute. Hector Herrera had a good chance in the 48th but couldn't get around on a header from a cross. Hopkins went off injured in the 53rd minute, with Peltola replacing him.

Triple subs in the 67th minute seemed to revive DC on a hot night; their offense was still stagnant, but the defense was better.

DC equalized in the 78th minute. After a long throw-in, the ball was headed into the center of the box. Ordaz headed back to Baribo who headed in. The goal occurred right after a Houston substitution.

Houston stormed the DC goal in the last part of the game (including 8 minutes of stoppage time) but DC defended desperately, in a bunker at the end, and held on for the draw.

It was a good road point, especially in the heat. DC overcame a 64-36% possession deficit, and 20 Houston shots, 5 on goal. DC itself had 7 shots, and 1 on goal (which went in).

Watching the game was a real contrast after 5 1/2 weeks of World Cup games. After watching Cup officials permit rough and tumble play, a more strict foul-calling ethic returned.

DC will have two days to rehydrate and cool off before their next game, this Saturday, July 25, at 730 against Toronto at Audi Field.
