No Fireworks Against Atlanta

Updated: 13 hours ago

As the photo above (partially) shows, there was a fireworks show at Audi Field last night (July 5) after DC United's game with Atlanta United, to honor Independence Day (one day late). However, there were definitely no fireworks during the game, as DC and Atlanta played to a 0-0 draw.

DC gave a solid defensive effort, limiting Atlanta to one shot on goal and six total, and no corner kicks. Unfortunately, their offense was not much better than Atlanta's (2 shots on goal, 9 total, 3 corner kicks). Antley hit the crossbar in the 7th minute. Benteke, rounding into shape after a long injury absence, still showed some rust during his 70 minute shift, missing on a header and an open shot from the top of the box. There were other chances, but as so often this season, the finishing was just not there.

For the spectators, It was a pleasant night, as the weather was not too hot or humid and there was a nice breeze.

DC started:

Barraza in goal

Rowles, Bartlett, Peltola in defense

Schnegg, Enow, Servania, Antley in midfield

Peglow, Benteke, Stroud in forward

Subs: Kijima for Stroud (60th), Dodson for Antley (72nd), Badji for Benteke (72nd), Leal for Peglow (80th), Hopkins for Enow (80th).

Herrera did not suit up for this one, presumably to allow rest after his Gold Cup stint with Guatemala, who reached the semifinals.

DC plays again on Wednesday (July 9), and this one is big: a US Open Cup Quarterfinal away to Nashville at 9pm.

League action for DC resumes next Saturday, July 12, at the LA Galaxy (a late game, 1030pm).
