DC United lost on the road 2-0 to Toronto FC yesterday afternoon (May 10). There were faithful SE road warriors and temporary Toronto residents like SEs Arun and Margo in the strangely empty stands (see above).
DC started
Barraza in goal
Schnegg, Rowles, Bartlett, Antley, Herrera on defense
Kijima, Enow, Servania, Stroud in midfield
Benteke at forward.
Subs: Murrell for Stroud (63rd), Leal for Kijima (63rd), Zouhir for Antley (71st), Peltola for Enow (71st ), Barajas for Servania (84th )
Not much to say about this one. It wasn't pretty, especially in the first half. DC was fortunate that the game was scoreless at halftime; Toronto outshot DC 13-1, and the DC shot was in stoppage time. Barraza made some nice saves, Toronto missed some good chances, and the post saved DC in the 10th minute.
In the 48th minute, a Toronto counterattack on a DC corner kick left the defense in disarray and Lorenzo Insigne scored on an open header from the middle of the box for Toronto's first goal. In the 66th minute, Bartlett scored an own goal for Toronto trying to defend a cross; if he hadn't tried, Toronto's Ola Brynhildsen would have had an easy tapin anyway. DC had more offense in the second half, and Benteke almost scored in the 85th minute but Toronto goalie Sean Johnson made a nice reflex save off the bar to keep it out of the net. It ended 2-0 Toronto.
DC plays again (it's 2 games a week through the end of May) on Wednesday May 14 at 730pm against NYCFC. There will be an abbreviated tailgate from 5-7pm at the Henson Center.
