In Philly, Almost a Mighty Upset

Last Thursday in the Leagues Cup (August 3), DC went out in a penalty shootout to the Philadelphia Union after a scoreless draw. DC played the Union well, actually dominating the first half. Jackson Hopkins looked very good. So we are out of the Leagues Cup and get some time off to rest and integrate new players, and watch to see if Miami and Messi run to the Cup title, or whether it's someone else.

We have 3 new players from the July transfer window:

1. Midfielder Gabriel Pirani, a Brazilian from the Club Santos (Pele's old club). Pirani is here on loan for the rest of 2023 with an option to buy his contract out after that.

2. Defender Eric Davis, a Panamanian international, who played in Slovakia last season. Davis played part of the Leagues Cup game against Philadelphia and looked good. Davis is signed through the end of this year with options in 2024 and 2025.

3. Forward Jose Fajardo, a Panamanian international, also for the rest of 2023 with options for the future. Fajardo scored twice in the Gold Cup earlier this summer and has been on loan to Peruvian club Cusco from Peru for the last 1 1/2 years.

And it's not completely official yet, but it looks like Taxi Fountas is out. Mutual termination of contract is what sources are saying as of now.

Coach Wayne Rooney is "frustrated" and "disappointed" with the results of the transfer window. We'll see how he feels about his options at the end of the season.

Next Match: Sunday evening, August 20, DC at NY Red Bulls in Harrison, NJ.
