DC United lost its first game in the post-Troy Lesesne era last night (July 12) to the Los Angeles Galaxy, 2-1. The game was played in Los Angeles.
Interim coach Kevin Flanagan (shown above) started
Barraza in goal
Schnegg, Rowles, Bartlett, Herrera in defense
Peglow, PIrani, Enow, Hopkins, Kijima in midfield
Badji at forward
Subs: Benteke for Badji (57th), Leal for Kijima (57th) , Servania for Hopkins (57th), Peltola for Enow (82nd)
The Galaxy dominated the first half, with close to 70% of the possession, and outshooting DC 10 to 2 (or 9 to 3, depending on whether you were looking at Apple TV or ESPN stats). DC managed no shots on goal, and LA scored in the 23rd minute as Marco Reus ripped a shot into the net after two blocked shots.
The first part of the second half was more of the same, and Diego Fagundez was left alone on the left side in the 53rd minute, converting a near post shot. 2-0 LA.
DC made a triple substitution in the 57th minute, including Benetke, who did not start. The game changed dramatically after that, with DC taking the game to LA. Servania hit the crossbar from close range in the 62nd minute. Surprisingly, LA had no subs until the 78th minute, and it cost them as they totally conceded the momentum to DC. Pirani scored for DC in the 77th minute on a beautiful pass from Peglow, cutting LA's lead to 2-1.
DC continued to threaten. Herrera just missed a header in the 84th minute, and a cross from Leal just missed Benteke in stoppage time, but DC was unable to get the tying goal, and it ended 2-1.
DC next travels to Charlotte, where they play on Wednesday (July 16) at 730pm. Herrera and Schnegg will both miss that game due to yellow card accumulation.
