Smoked in Philadelphia

Last Sunday evening (September 23) in Chester, PA, the Philadelphia Union defeated DC United, 4-0. The picture above shows pregame festivities.

DC started Bono in goal, 5 defenders (Santos, Peltola, McVey, Tubbs and Herrera), 4 midfielders (Pirani, Enow, Klich and Stroud) and Benteke as the lone forward. Bartlett was out of central defense with a yellow card accumulation suspension.

DC played well for 10 minutes. Pirani missed a good shot just over the bar in the second minute, and Klich forced at good save out of Philly goalie Andre Blake in the 11th minute. Unfortunately, that changed drastically. In the 13th minute, Philadelphia's Quinn Sullivan beat first Santos and then Enow, and then crossed to the far post where a totally unmarked Mikkel Uhre tapped in a goal from 2 yards out. Tubbs was the nearest defender. Three minutes later Daniel Gazdag pounced on a poor clearance and slotted home a second goal. The half ended 2-0 Philadelphia.

Dajome and Badji came in for Pirani and Tubbs respectively to start the second half, but it was more of the same. Sullivan eluded two DC defenders in the 51st minute and crossed to a wide-open Tai Baribo, whose header made it 3-0. Bono stemmed the damage for a while with two good saves, and Dajome hit the post for DC, but in the 69th minute a horrible back pass was intercepted and then slide over to an open Gazdag, making it 4-0. Both keepers made nice saves later, and the game ended with no further scoring.

Ku-Dipietro came in for Santos in the 65th minute, Rodriguez did the same for Enow in the 72nd minute, and Murrell came in for Stroud in the 82nd minute.

On the bright side, 30 Screaming Eagles bussed up to the game. It was a pleasant trip, and the weather was great.

DC plays again this Saturday (September 28) at home against Columbus. There are 4 games left.
